USPS Media Mail is the best rate for books.
You can use media mail for 1 lb book ($1.59) to 70 lbs for $25.89. Same 70 lb will cost at least $34 with UPS.

However, there are a couple of advantages for using UPS.
UPS is generally faster than Postal Service media mail
UPS provide basic insurance for content without additional fee

Postal service, for shipping books, is definitely cheapest by far. Use "media mail," "bound printed matter" category for shipments within the U.S. Also, if you are shipping overseas, postal service has "Economy M-bag" service available for books -- just 95 cents a pound anywhere in the world; even cheaper for Canada. SLOW, but it gets there (about 4 weeks average to Europe, for example.) I've been shipping both of these methods for over 30 years and they've only lost one box, so don't worry about insurance, etc.

I don't care in the least. I seldom get anything but junk mail, and that's just a waste of money and trees. If I ship a package, there's no way I'm sending it via USPS; they are slow and unreliable, and things are lost or damaged on a regular basis. As far as I'm concerned, we can do away with the Post Office completely. I'll stick with UPS or Fedex and e-mail. The postal workers and their union wanted more and more money for doing less and less, and thought they'd be indispensible; they priced themselves out of jobs, and I say good riddance to bad rubbish.

The USPS has something called media mail. It is on the slow side but is reasonably priced.

If your looking for something much faster try a prepaid box from the USPS, one price to anywhere in the US.

Weight of the package is definetly a factor. If the package is over 3 lbs then it makes sense t consider UPS rates.

In my experience , USPS has been less expensive. Especially when I can send stuff slowly and do not have to rush it out .They might even have a plan if you are a frequent customer / business customer.

USPS is usually the cheapest, they even have a lower media rate if you tell them you are shipping books.
