OK, a guy I fancy says he plays rock, classical and folk music (guitar and sings). What the heck is folk music, esp. Irish folk? Can someone give me some examples of artists or songs, because I have no idea what he is talking about!

folk music is ballads that we actually understand each wor d. It's like telling a story with music in the background. where ever you download your music from do a search for folk music and download a few. the pogues, stompin tom connors, great big sea john prine.

folk music has some deep roots to it. it is either a protest type of song or a song of some historical significance. much of itr is political in nature too. maybe go to a library and look it up as well. it thrived through the sixties and went into an era of folk rock. it still is out there now. some of the original artists still are performing without naming names of course.

Shame you didn't watch Folk Britannia that was recently shown on BBC3, then latterly on BBC2. That was a very good documentary series on folk music in general, and the major protagonists.

The Pogues got their name from the Irish expression 'Pogue Mahone' which means 'Kiss My Ar*se'

It is Noise somewhat similar to music sung by people who cannot sing accompanied in the main by people who cannot play. it requires confidence but no talent.

Country and Western or Scrumpy and Western however sounds similar to the stupid or tone deaf but to those with an ear for music is some of the finest music known to man, See the Wurzels, literally buy some tickets and go and see them or buy their CDs
