Ahhh.... Holden Caulfield, i haven't read any other character in any other books developed so nicely and accurately. He is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. one of my favorite line in the book is "All morons hate it when you call them a moron." That sums up my thoughts, i would give 10/10 rating. must read.

I found it to be one of the WORST books I have EVER read. (And I LOVE to read.) This wasn't because I was reading it for school, either. We were also assigned "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest J. Gaines that summer, which has some dysfunction in it too, yet I ended up crying when one of the characters was executed. Holden Caulfield is quite simply an *** that I cannot sympathize with.

Want insane teenage boy dysfunction? Try "A Separate Peace", by John Knowles.

It was the only book in HS that I read and I loved it. Though it was a long time ago and I don't remember it at all, just a really good feeling when I hear about the book and remember a tear or two while reading it.

yes i have and it's pretty good and all but i have to recommend "Raise high the roof beam, carpenter" a salinger short story; i believe it to be the single greatest short story ever written in english; actually, all the Glass family stories are excellent. as far as "Catcher", it's a classic, but you have to take holden for what he is, a screwed-up teenager, which explains it's eternal appeal. Pheobe is by far the most sensible person in the whole book. again, check out "roof beam" it's AWESOME!!!!

The first time I read it, I did so for pleasure and enjoyed the book. But the second time I read it, it was for a class assignment and I found Holden Caulfield to be a whiny little brat.

I have read it a couple of times and I love it. I especially like the simplicity and the honesty of holden. The idea of just relaxing and doing stuff just because we want to.

I think it is a true modern classic because it captures a mood at a certain period of time.

I read it a lot of times, I love the style in which it's wriiten and i can relate strongly to the character. So it's one of my favorites.
All the other books by JD Salinger are also brilliant and I will always recommend them.

I absolutely adore the book. I read it for the first time a few months ago, and I zipped through it in no time.

Yes. I liked it and our teacher made it fun in that we could say the cuss words in class as long as they were in book context. So people got really creative with it, and actually discussed the book more!

ps- I still like to use the phrase "gave her the time". hilarious!
