OK, so this sounds real stupid but a fish (cod in fact) was left on the carpet when it was removed from the freezer and forgot to be back in again.

Now the place absolutely stinks and nothing seems to remove the smell. I have had to leave the house as it is not possible to breath. Have tried scrubbing with gallons of water, fabreeze, bathroom cleaner spray ...... etc but nothing seems to help. Andy ideas?

As a housekeeper, I have run into several situations similar to this... Here's my professional opinion. :)

You need to get a professional carpet cleaner to officially clean the carpet area where the fish was laying and a about a foot beyond than the area that you have already tried to clean.

Professional steam cleaners use water that hits the carpet at a very high temp degree of 240. This will kill anything that might be "growing" in your carpet and making it smell.

However, not only does the steam kill it, the powerful vacuum they use sucks out all the dirty water! There is no use using cleaner or water to clean the area without fully removing the dirty water. Sorry... not even a rental carpet cleaner can do this.

*Call your local Professional Carpet Cleaner! For a small area, I doubt the price will be over $75.00.

A carpet cleaner that has chemicals that eat the bactieria that causes the bad smells. If no luck with that replace carpet. Problems with carpet are not the carpet it is the pad under the carpet..

call in the pros. You need a professional steam cleaning/shampoo

in the mean time.. get fresh coffee grounds (not instant). Randomly put about a cup (each) into several bowls or even coffee filters all over the room. It absorbs smells.

Here is a link with ideas on how to get the smell out. Most of it is about how to get the fish smell out of clothes, but if you scroll down a little it asks about getting it out of carpeting.

Get the carpets chemically cleaned. It normally costs about £70 for the ground floor of a house.

Clean it with a dilution of biological washing powder. This will get rid of the smell, if there is any residue left, then sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the night before vacuuming. Good luck

Sounds like you may want to replace that part of the carpet. It probably saturated the padding underneath it. In an case the padding too would need to be clean.
