I'm asking as a teacher. Kids are not supposed to I.M. during class, but many do. It would be great to just remove the temptation.

I assume these are classroom computers.

Do they have a software firewall installed? Check into the configuration options for that. You'll have to research the port #s to block. You'll have to block the students' tampering with those settings, of course. See if the firewale program lets you set a configuration password.

Also consider properly setting up the computers so that the students are not using accounts that have permission to install IM software to begin with.
