We are now facing an unprecedented general election for Governor. A white female vs. a black man, neither of which Massachusetts has ever elected to this position. I am wonering, even though many people are tired of the republicans using our State House as a stepping stone to move on higher levels, will people vote against Deval Patrick because of racial prejudice? Or against Kerry Healy because of gender prejudice?

I always mix up effect and affect - as you said 'get over it'. I'm just curious if it will play a part, that is all. And MA has had Republican governors for 16 years now (2 of which did not stick around to complete the job and the one who is here now only shows up for high profile situations, hmmm - 'libs' don't always win.

Thank you Pask - I see it much like you do. My husband suggested to me last night that many people voted for Gabrielli and Reilly because of racial bias. He also thinks that more will vote for Mihos or Ross for that reason also which would take votes from Patrick and allow Healey to come out on top. I don't see that this would happen. I really think MA is ready for this no matter which way it turns out.

This is an interesting dynamic. I think alot of people expected this outcome. It's pretty monumental on both counts.
Even though we did have a female republican serve as governor (Jane Swift), she never technically ran for the post(starting off as Lt Gov. just as Healy). Which is just as well, because she would have tanked. Healy has a bigger issue, because Romney more or less gave her the reins to test drive the role during his term, and with the exception of Melanie's Law, as huge as that is, she really hasn't broken much ground. She'll have to explain her views, some of which we're now discovering differ from Romney's, and convince the public that she's not going to switch if elected. She's not as slick as Mitt. Case in point last night's primary, where she straight out the gate started her live smear campaign on Deval Patrick, which can set a bad precedant for the weeks to come. Deval Patrick is going to have to step it up, keep doing what he's doing, but show that he's developed a thicker skin now, because while he and his former opponents agreed to keep it clean, that is clearly not the agreement in this new arena. I do not feel that that gender and race will be the driving factor in this election - because neither of them are hilighting those points as the basis of their platform.

I do not like Healy but at the same time Deval Patrick has a background in exploiting the poor and is a racist. Check out his history and see for yourself. he fired white teachers in the past simply because they are white and he scammed poor mainly black people with shaddy loans. Not only that his work in coca cola is sickening.

He is just another rich a##hole using race and his rags to riches ploy to get people to vote for him. Just like Gabrieli was using the "son of immigrants" crap and Riley the "common man never forgot my roots" garbage and tried to get the black vote by choosing a black woman to run as vice governor who has the IRS on her for not paying all her taxes.

If you have to vote for an individual based on being part of a minority...you have picked the wrong person...

The real problem is a political system that takes your 'free vote' and gives all the power to a party or person with no accountability to the people....

We have the technology to ensure accountability...let the internet govern these politicians....give us the information we need...(that they will hide from us...)

easily maximum Asians are conservative via fact they prefer protecting their money quite of giving it to the government to squander. There are some that like liberal immigration standards, yet McCain is not any Republican whilst it is composed of that so he would desire to have the Asian vote squared away.

The correct word is "affect" in your question.

Just vote for the best person for the job. Get over race and gender already, people!
