This is a question for very knowledeable auto engineers and technicans9(no need to answers for points folks):

While driving is it advisiable to Auto gear car in "neutral gear' and allow it to glide on a slope? ( assuming car is going in "D gear" at high speed say 70mph and you then move it to "Neutral" and take advantage of the cars speed and slope on the raod and ride for a mile or so without spending gas?)

If so will it result in gas savings? Are ther any bad/ill effects on the car becasue of this?

Thanks for your intelligent answeres!

I have done something like this before, almost exactly. When you take the car out of gear and put it in neutral, the RPM's will drop to a bare idle, the same idle speed as when you're sitting still with the car in park. Since idling uses less gas than higher RPM's, you will save gas this way. The problem comes at the end of the down-hill section when your car is still idling and you're still moving at 60-70 MPH. You will be essentially forcing the engine to go from 700 RPM to 2500 or 3000 RPM instantly. I cannot see this as being a good thing for your engine or transmission. However, what I have done (and suffered no ill effects as a result of) was to rev the engine to the RPM level you see at 65-70 MPH and then shift back into drive while holding that higher RPM level. The engine/transmission essentially won't notice the difference in speed bewteen each another and you should be alright. By doing this, however, you should not expect to save any meaningful amount of gas and the risks of doing damage to your drive-train far out-weigh the savings you'll get from using less gas.

Please do not drive car in a neutral gear because when car is going down the hill, it will gain more speed and to control the car you have to use breaks, which may become hot and may not work properly when needed. Car is in more control when it is driven in a 'Drive gear'. It is not worth to save gas over a life.

you would save gas if the hill was 100 miles long a little slope will not dent a drop of gas. buy a manual i put in in nuetral down hills just to give my foot a break, not my wallet

It will not save much gas for you.No bad effects on the engine either. But if you have a manual gearbox there you can learn to drive very economically.I only buy manual gearbox, and computer is standard now in new cars.there you can see the result direct. Hope you are happy with my answer!
