I am a college freshman who has to do a monologue for the Shakespearean play, Othello. I am looking for an inexpensive costume for the role of Othello. After all, I'll only be using it once. Any suggestions?

If all you want is a costume for a one-time use, Ebay may be your best bet since authenticity and durability probably aren't an issue. If you want a costume you can wear repeatedly, do a search on Google for Elizabethan or 16th century costume. Mens clothes are hard to find for sale, women are the largest demographic in the costume market.

Ebay has some of the cheapest Elizabethan costumes I've seen. Look up Medieval costumes, Elizabethan costumes, etc. Tudor shop has some decent stuff, may be more Medieval than Elizabethan though. You could also look into renting a costume from a costume shop. But you'll have to look one of those up in your area. Depends on your budget. A lot of times the Medieval/Eliz clothes are a tad expensive, but I really do recomend looking on Ebay.

for inspiration.
Start with a blousy "poet's shirt"- a thrift store may have these, or they're very simple to make.
Then buy or make some very full pants, knee-length with a cuff, worn over opaque tights (a local ballet store is a good source for hosen).
Add skirting and epaulets to a vest, either pre-made, or make your own, for a jerkin/doublet.
This is Not authentic; but for the vast majority of the public, they'll think it's close enough...
