how do you apply from the US? What are you chances of getting in as an international student? what's their SAT or ACT range? Do I need to take other tests to apply? thanks!

I have friends at St. Andrews and Edinburgh. The first thing you should do is email their admission's office to see what they need. You should also check out this site for St. Andrew's: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/services/admissions/ugrad.htm.

Because a lot of Americans like to go to Scotland for school, it is pretty tough and expensive to go. My friend at St. Andrews was a legacy, had a 1410 on her SATs (old SATs) and was 4th in her class. Although you don't need your SATs to get into schools abroad because they are an American test, they will most likely be on your high school transcript and these schools know what they mean. ACTs aren't really considered because they are mainly used in the heartland (at least they were until recently), and those applying to schools in the UK tend to be from the coasts and if they are from the heartland, tend to have taken the SAT because they want to go to a coastal school.

To apply you need to apply here: http://www.ucas.ac.uk/apply/ and most schools will need recommendations, transcripts, and a personal statement. The application is very similar to a US application.

Another great option is to go to an American school and study abroad in Scotland. Philadelphia area schools have the St. Andrews scholarship that pays for you to study at top Scottish universities. The Institute of Study Abroad through Butler University in Indiana also facilitates study abroad programs to Scotland for American students at different schools.

Good Luck!
