I'm assuming it's from using a fabric softener.

Fill washer with hot water only and add 2 cups white vinegar and run through a cycle. This works great on dishwashers also.

I have to clean my washer about once a month - that softener is great... but it sure leaves a mess!

I doubt the area below the water level has any scum on it, right? When washing your clothes, they take care of keeping the bottom half of the aggitator clean.

What I do is: While the washer is filling up with a load of clothes, I take a rag and dip it into the wash water (with the detergant in it already) and just wipe everything down really good, including the aggitator and fabric softener dispenser (mine is one that is in the middle of the aggitator). You can also take the top of the aggitaor off by pulling up on it (depending on the model) and rinse it under hot water. You'll have to shake it to get the water out, but it helps!

Rubbing the buildup with warm water and a cloth... it comes off very easy.

When I'm done, I just throw the rag into the washer and shut the lid.

most of the answers are on the right track by using vinegar. My suggestion is to fill the machine with warm/hot water; add about 1/2 gal of white vinegar and let it go through the entire cycle. I might also advise you cut back on the fabic softener, or use dryer softener sheets only. If you rinse with cold water the fabric softener will "scum" not only on your machine but on your clothing.

Fill the washer with warn water, and pour a gallon of distilled vinegar into it, Run the machine through an entire cycle. The vinegar will cleanse the hoses and unclog soap scum from them too.

Yes, your right, its built up detergent and fabric softner. Try using vinegar and soap solution so the acid will "cut" it. Or, Simple green, or 409 and a hard bristled brush to brush away the scum. If its thick enough, scrape it away first with a plastic putty knife, and not a metal one, or you may just scar up the aggitator.

I wish you well..

You can use any soap to get it off then run the machine a full cycle without any clothes in it. If the machine has a funky smell you can add Clorox to the water and let it run a full cycle.

Use a mild detergent to wipe it off and clean it up then run the washing machine with no detergent to really get a good rinse in.
