Not the nature of mankind, but the nature of government. War is how governments justify their existence. Even when at peace, governments prepare for war, or declare war on intangibles, e.g. war on poverty, war on drugs, etc. If the government could not prove its usefulness to its citizens by always fighting off real or imagined dangers, we might soon figure out that we really don't need government. Governments exist for the purpose of making war on enemies. As long as there are governments there will be war. Those who seek peace must seek a world without government.

In many cases, it is caused by greed of corrupt governments. Then there are other cases, where a country is starving and the population along with the leaders are trying to survive. However, in most cases, there is a lot of money made from war and if they can collect the spoils from the nations they defeat, that is also to their advantage. One thing is certain, all wars are wrong and should be avoided as much as possible. Too many innocent people always end up being killed and that is an absolute tragedy.

Because we are the most prosperous and powerful country in the world, when you are in this position you have to defend yourself and your interest. The only other option is to become a smaller, poor country, then you are at the whim of the more powerful countries.

War is an unfortunate side affect of being human, maybe we will outgrow It but I do not see when.

I also think the solution is more complex then hanging around the Presidents ranch or waving a sign chanting slogans, they may mean well but I think they are viewed are kooks and actually harm the cause of world peace.

We aren't always at war. There was that breakout of peace during the eight years between Bush I and Bush II, also known as the Clinton administration.

If you want peace, don't vote for Republicans.
