actually the bigestdrain if you want to look at it that way is elderly and handicapped benefit so i expect you have a problem with them too, contrary to popular belief people dont choose to be singl eparents and most try to get of benefit but find themselves trapped by the law did you know they are worse of working eg council tax rent medication child care dental bills glasses all have to be payed as soon as the get a job i forgot transport so think before you judge i know it hurts paying tax but single parents arnt our biggest expence by the way babies are living things not mistakes

no offence, but that's a really small mined way of seeing things. How can you judge someone elses life and life choices?
Perhaps some Mother's have worked for years and years and are receiving contribution based benefits (did you even know that some benefits are paid to people out of the national insurance they have already paid?) Also, say someone is a young, single Mum, who isn't in a relationship, that could be for a number of reasons...she could have fled a violent partner, been left for someone else, had a really sh*t childhood and isn't able to form healthy relationships. Her problems are much bigger than your tax gripes (and it isn't 22p of our earnt £1 that is taken, we're only taxed that amount on second jobs)
At the end of the day, it may seem unfair to you, but these people are living on the VERY MINIMUM amount that the government states you can survive on...it's no picnic, and if they had the means, education and confidence to do so, most would love a job.
I work with the people you are ignorantly judging, and I think you should think twice about it...there for the grace of God and all that...

I take it you are not a parent then?
22p goes not just to mothers, but to pensioners, the disabled and the unemployed (note that there have been a great number of layoffs this year, so don't slag them off). Some mothers are unable to be living with the father of the child, due to domestic violence, illness or death. The father may also be unemployed or made redundant, as mine was in the 80s thanks to Thatcher.
Stop living in the Victorian age. Claiming benefit is not a shame - it is a necessity for millions of people who would otherwise starve.

Sorry i think your views are ridiculous. So what would you suggest for a mother that has worked all her life and paid taxes but unfortunately her partner dies. Should she and her children starve to death? Benefits are good to help people get back on their feet and for the most vulnerable who might not be able to work. However, there is obvioulsy a problem as benefits encourages the irresponsible to behave like parasites. At least mothers have a job... raising children. Its the single, childless layabouts that bother me.

It is no coincidence that the numbers of lone parents increased drastically when the powers that be decided to give them their own council houses instead of putting the "sinful" girls in mother and baby hostels and persuading them to give the baby up for adoption. Despite more contraception than ever being available, Britain is the single parent capital of europe - why? - It is quite obvious, because here they can reel in thousands of pounds, per year and get houses or flats furnished with money from the state. If they are on benefit - and most of them are - they can get interest free loans [if not actual grants] from the state. They couldn't earn half the money they get this way - so yes, the amount of benefit is wrong.

Social welfare is right, it's the system that is wrong.
Yes the parents of children should work to support them not you and me.
However with a system that puts claimant's in a poverty trap where they can not afford to work as the benefit is better than reward gained from work, then it's the system that is at fault.
Why can someone who has never contributed get all sorts of benefit including mobility / cars when my mother who worked for 50 years and paid her taxes is not entitled even to a home help?

We need a system to support those in need. The one we've got doesn't work very well. Among other things, it encourages the useless and lazy to breed excessively, and we're now probably into out third generation of useless breeders. Possibly fouth or fifth as they tend to start early.
Where will evoulution take us with that as a factor?
The Chinese had (have?) a fairly sensible system: benefits for the first child, which have to be paid back if they had a second.

I understand how you feel, you work and try to save and paid taxes. You try to be safe and be responsible not just for yourself, but for any life's you bring into this world.
It bothers you to see people on welfare and living off the government with your tax dollars, and not trying.
But, this is the way it has to be, without it, we will slip deeper into a third world culture. There are extenuating circumstances, we can not decide which kid will be allowed to eat.
Do what you got to do for yourself, and hope that you will never go down that path.

i understand what you are saying but its not all mothers - i must say that i think the benefits system is in a state- my motehr is really ill with cancer and it is a struggle to get any help - however down the road a few miles away are people who have never worked- get money from the state- a free house , free prescriptions, education etc - seems unfair - the harder you work the more you are penalised

as a single childless woman i have to totally agree with you.....
i think it's a disgrace that some woman go about popping out kids without giving a single thought to how they are going to raise these kids respectably......such by giving them a good quality of life and not teaching them that it is ok to live off other people.
nothing wrong with a elping hand but the benefits they receive are too high
