or do we get points taken away if we get a bad rating?.. What's the purpose of rating someone?

if someone rates either your question or answer with a 'thumbs up' you get 1 point
if someone gives you a 'thumbs down' you'll never know it unless you go to that particular question.
Ohterwise we get 2 pts for answering a question and 10 pts if it is chosen 'best answer' either by the person who asked the question or by voters. You get 10 pts either way.
It costs you 5 pts to ask a question and if you choose a 'best answer' you get 3 back.
The point of rating someone, I don't know unless it's somewhat of a 'punishment' thing
oh and I forgot to add to,that if YOU rate a question you get 1 pt.

No and I don't know what the purpose of the point are except to rate the good questioners for some later purpose.

I just rated your answer and no you did not get points. I don't know what the purpose is but if I rate someone a thumbs down it removes their answer.

if someone rates you, be it thumbs up or down, it wont affect your points. only when your answer is chosen as best answer and you get a thumb up then you get 10points for being chosen as best and an additional 1 point for every thumb up you get, up to a maximum of 50 thumb ups. thumb downs for best answer wont affect points too.
the purpose of rating someone is to acknowledge that person for his/her good/bad comment. it can be used as a gauge for the asker whether a particular person's comments are agreed by others. however it is not really a good gauge since some people anyhow rate.

I thought that you might get voted the best answer if the asker didn't choose a winner, but I might be wrong.
