it may be too many programs running in the backround at the same time, if you go to system config click on start up then disable all...and restart. this will keep programs from running on their own when you start the computer, you only run the programs you need, it will run alot faster and won't freez so often, it also helps if you do disc cleanup and defrag at least once a week...

I had this problem a few months ago. It was due to damage to my hard drive after power failure while I was using my computer. The only way I could solve it was getting a new hard drive fitted. Very costly, but all fine now.

I bet that you have a SpyWare problem.
You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.
This double whammy will help keep you safe and running faster

I would wipe out your computer. It has probably been a while, and you could have a fresh start.
