Please disregard the person who is obviously a racist. People like him do not belong on this forum and he is a disgrace.
Now, the DMV will have information regarding legal name changing. Go there and ask for information. This will take a few months, and cost some money, so be prepared for that and be patient. It really is not a difficult thing to do, simply lots of legal mumbo jumbo to go through. I don't know if you will need to actually stand in front of a judge. That will be determined by your state law. Each state handles these things a bit differently. An alias can be filed with the DMV, which you can use much the same as a formal legal name change. But, if you want it formal, then you will need to go through the entire legal process. I doubt very much that you will need an attorney.
Also, simply goggle for information. There is a ton of information online, just go to your states legal website and you should fiind much of the information you need to get started right there. Also, the Nolon legal book seriers has numerous legal instructions on how to self do many different things. I suggest you contact your local Barns and Noble or another book store and ask if Nolon has a book on legally changing names. It won't hurt anyway, it is just a phone call away! If Nolon does have a book out on this it will walk you through the entire process. However, don't use the forms in the book as many different counties within a state have certain forms they demand things be filed on. So, go to your local courthouse and ask for the packet for a name change.
My mother legally changed her name a few years ago. It was not difficult at all and cost her about three hundred dollars. She did all the paperwork herself. The three hundred dollars was the filing fee. The package was free, however, each state determines if they charge for the packets or not. Some may be free, like a restraining order packet, or some cost like for a divorce.
Good luck and I hope you choose a great name as it will be permenant, unless you go and change it again. lol

Hi!
Firstly it's a petition (sorry ot be picky but you need to know what it's called so you can ask a lawyer about it). Secondly, hire a lawyer/soliciter, explaining what you want to do, thye should be able to draw up your petition for you and guide you through the process of filing it as there is a lot of red tape to go through...I will warn you this will take at least 3 months maybe even a couple of years.
Good luck under your new name
