yes, we were driving home and i decided to stop off at the local hardware store first... my wife noticed some really dark clouds off to the left but it was a small area so I said it was probably just a spring shower...
while we were in the store the wind suddenly picked up, the sky went dark, then hail started to pile up against the glass doors.. then the lights in the store went out and water started flooding the floor... the noise got really loud for a few seconds and then everything was clear again...
When we walked out we saw that the Steel Store sign (about 40 feet tall) had been twisted apart and the top was nowhere to be found....

It was very quiet at first with a lot of rain. It was about 4 AM so it was too dark to see it coming. Then it was like the sound of a distant train. As it got closer, rushing winds grew and the noise was growing so loud you literally held your breath. Then I heard a loud crash, wind receding and then quiet rain again. I didn't really have time to do anything but it must have been at least 30 minutes of time that past. When I went and looked out the front porch there was a branch through the roof. Puzzled I went and looked out the back door. A huge, very old oak tree about 5 feet in circumference had been ripped out of the ground and laid across our house. The roots were bigger than your legs. It amazes me still to this day that the tornado could rip a tree out of the ground like that, just a few feet from my house and not even touch a shingle on my roof (except the tree did!) :)

I saw one from about 30 miles away. That was pretty awesome. But once, while I was in Nebraska, A tornado ran through Omaha, about 4 blokes from where we were. It was cool but a little scary. At the same time, another one was in the town where I was living, in Iowa and it ripped right through one of the barns and the chicken coop! It was pretty sad.

We get tornados all the time where I live. That thing you always hear about them sounding like a train -- totally true.

Noisy, dirty, and it literally takes your breath away. Fortunately for me, it was by too quick to get scared. Afterward though, I got a case of the shakes. You could scream and not hear it.

A small one (it would be called a dust devil), but it was about 20 feet tall.
It was really weird, watching it dance about, slurping up dust and loose garbage.
