The majority of the oil we use comes from the middle east although we could use oil from the western hemisphere we don't because of political reasons.

The US uses around 13 million barrels a day and produces about 6-6.5 million barrels a day. Most of the rest which is imported does indeed come from Canada, Mexico, and Venezuela. Saudi Arabian oil is mostly sent to Europe & Japan, and I have heard that most Saudi oil is unsuitable for US use because it is too high in sulfer content. However, the Earth is a very small planet, and getting smaller all the time, and the global oil market is just that....global. So what happens in Saudi Arabia and Iran and Iraq has a HUGE impact on the global oil market.

From what I heard it is Canada and Venezuela that supply most of America's oil. Canada does not have the facilities to transport oil from the west Alberta, to eastern Canada , so eastern Canada has to import Saudi oil, which is shipped to Maine, then transported to Refineries in Eastern Canada. While Canada is self-sufficient in oil production, in that it produces all it needs, the cost of a nation wide pipeline was considered prohibitive. maybe the should re-think this since gasoline is now 10 times as expensive at the pumps as it was when the pipeline idea was last reviewed.

I agree that Canada is the #1 source of US Oil imports. That said, I think Saudi is way higher than either Argentina or Brazil.
One other thing: it is truly a global market and distribution costs enter into the equation. So it is probably not a surprise that we buy as much as we do from Mexico and Canada.

This actually makes a great point about conspiracy thoeries.
If we wanted to go to war for oil, woudlnt it make more sense to attack argentina?
Conspiracy thoeries typically sound good at first glance but breakdown when you look at the facts. I know this wasnt what you were asking directly but I thought it was a relevant point to make.

NOOO. Most people think we get them from the Middle East, but you are right. We get a majority from North and South America. We think this because it has be glorified in the "war" that we are fighting so we can get oil from them.
