You control the type of fertilizer you use, therefore this would be the independent variable. The plant growth is dependent on the type of fertilizer you use, making it the dependent variable.

Calm down Cammie, breathe deep.
The type of fertilizer would determine how well a plant grows, I would think, so I would make that my independent variable.
Don't let the big words snow you.
Just look at which one would more likely determine,
or influence, or change the behavior of the other, and that is the independent variable.
To depend means to hang from.
The dependent variable hangs from the other one,
is infuenced by the other one.
Ten more breaths. Now are variables or frustration
independent?
Hey- why did you throw that?!!

Think of it this way:

which one depends on the other?

will the amount of fertilizer change if the plant grows more? Not really

will the amount of growth change if more fertilizer is used? possibly

so growth is dependent on fertilizer
