Yes !!
JFK would be able to answer that one , But he was shot in 1963 :(
Seems Cuba is the poor relation after 43 years of this stupid embargo .
Ain't no missiles there ( They never actually got there in the first place ! ) and the cold war has been over for 10+ years .
Castro is an old man now , he is not likely to give anyone much trouble .
Hmm and Yes there ain't much oil in Cuba so no real reasons to do business with them :(
Let them eat cake as the French once said about the poor people .
As you mentioned the USA trades freely with Vietnam , After all the %^$& *$^@ that went down between the 2 countries 1962->1975 , seems all is forgiven now , Why is Cuba any different ???
Seems that keeping a TRUE communist State/Country running for so long is some sort of threat to the supposed real world ?
People in Cuba seem to have a good lifestyle , Castro gave them a true Communist state and it seems to have worked well for them , Time to give them a open trade deal as they have been out there in the No Mans land for far too long !
A VERY GOOD QUESTION !! - NOT LIKELY TO GET A TRUE ANSWER WITHIN OUR LIFETIME :(

The US wanted to continue with the norm under Batista. Between the United Fruit and the Cuban crime syndacates, the people were seriously suffering. Castro wanted a Social Democracy, but the embargo forced him to turn to the USSR for oil for suger deal. The "Bay of Pigs" which Kennedy inherited from Eisenhauer gave Russia the opening it needed. They insisted on putting missles on Cuba as a guarantee that there would not be another Bay Of Pigs. It gave Castro no option. The crisis was averted when JFK gave Kruchev his word there would be no repetition. When Castro took over, Havana & all of Cuba was a haven for criminals controlling drugs, prostitution including children ,gambling. So for the best part they were sent abroad, mostly to Miami. At another point he emptied the prisons and asylems and sent them also. Interesting test if you travel, visit the garbage dumps in Mexico city Sao paulo, San Salvador ,and any major central American city, and you will see children and women searching for food or pieces of sheet metal to make a lean to. This you will never see in Havana or elsewhere in Cuba, before Casto yes, now no.
One of the most serious crimes you can commit in Cuba is child abuse or molestation. It will get you 25 year in a Cuban jail, which tend to be a bit harsher than US or Canada. Cuba has a moraturium on Capital punishment and hope to get rid of it by 2009.

My friend,
you must look at the current administration as well as the general tendency of Americans not to admit to ever being wrong!
Think about it, Castro has made the miracle happen... a state that's communist and not totally screwed up! Cuba might have a real divide in terms of the have's and have not's but then so do we! They have kept going despite the best efforts of generations of very lame policy makers and their decisions (Bay of Pigs springs readily to mind!!!!) in the US of A .
Finally there is all the bull flying about that the CIA are trying to kill off poor old Fidel... not being denied particularly vigorously is it?
I hope that a change of Pres. coupled with a change in the perception of Cuba as a nice place to vacation will make the difference.
PS... the Cuban missile crisis was a long time ago, MOVE ON!

The electoral power of the Cuban immigrants in Florida.Everyone thinks and probably rightly so they are needed to take the white house.Pure power politics, this has nothing to do with values or human rights it's all about keeping power and that goes for both American parties.
Politics at its finest,sigh

Plain and Simple.. The US does not have to trade with anyone.. Why does the US have to trade with Cuba, what does Cuba offer to the United States?
Now let me talk from a personal level.. My family had to flee Cuba because Fidel stole their Country.. .. Why should the US put money in his pocket... he does nothing for the people of Cuba, why do you think thousands flee there.....

Dropping an embargo while castro is alive, would be basically forgiving him for what he has done.
Never having an embargo is quite different than having one, and dropping it.
---
now ask yourself, why people would risk the lives of their families on a raft made of barrells to flee from that government.

Good question. I hate the embargo. I am getting too old to drive to Canada or Mexico and smuggle in my cuban cigars.

I can only guess we've still got a chip on our shoulder dating from the Bay of Pigs fiasco. You're right about those other countries, but we have a double standard.
