Is there any history behind it? Or just a money making scam?

Just to make money. Plenty of sports franchises do the "third jersey" thing, especially with black jerseys. It's just a way to have another jersey for people to buy.

I don't know about a black Giants jersey but, if there is one, it could have something to do with, Wellington Mara and, Robert
Tisch, the two majority owners who, passed away last year.

Giants official jerseys are blue and the other is white. they have a red throwback color as well. If there was a black then i don't think its official. Check to see if its licensed by the NFL.
