It is considered to be something you are genetically predisposed to ... but, my mother and sister both got stretch marks that remained for many years, while I got very few - and those that I did get on my belly are invisible 2 years later. There are 3 ways I *tried* to avoid them, and none of those is actually guaranteed.
1) not take being pregnant as a free license to put on as much weight as possible - gaining weight and stretching the skin out too quickly is said to be one reason ppl get stretch marks.
2) I made sure my prenatal vitamin had vitamin E in it and took it regularly - E is supposed to be good for the skin.
3) I used a product called Mothers' Oil, purchased at High Health (but I am pretty sure it's sold all over the place). It is a combinations of oils that are supposted to be good for skin.
If you do get stretch marks, take heart. Many women I know consider them to be a badge of honor. And on many people, they disappear over time.
Best of Luck!

My son was almost ten pounds & I only weighed 135 when i got pregnant & i am proud to say i can wear a bikini to this day.My secret?, There are 4 areas you must pay attention to=1 breast 2 the area right above your behind 3 upper thigh & 4 stomach including above the belly button , pure vitamin E oil [ it is thick and very sticky, and can ruin articles of clothing .But it is after all maternity wear.] this should be applied after any shower no matter what. If you are really concerned with the whole stretch mark issue use it through out the day. I found i had some issues so through out the day i used pure coco butter. I was very generous with my applications. There are some food supplements availible at the health food stores that are supposed to help, but i found that the prenatal vitamins & iron that i was taking was all i could handle orally. And really what is a stretch mark anyway, but a battle wound of womenhood.Good Luck & Congrads to you!

Like folks have said before, if you are destined to get them you probably will.. The products like cocoa butter can't hurt, though. I think probably keeping active (if possible), well hydrated, good nutrition, and trying to maintain a steady but not over-the-top weight gain is probably the best way to avoid stretch marks. So, if you can gain the healthy amount of weight for you slightly slower by watching your diet, do it. It might reduce your amount of stretch marks. But still there is the part of pregnancy where you drop -- and that can't be avoided, sooo stretchy marks may come regardless of what you do.

Retin-A, a lot of people use it for wrinkles but you need a doctor's prescription for it. Vitamin E and fish oil are also really good. Cocoa butter works better if your skin is dark. You cant prevent it but drinking a lot of water and your vitamins help a
LOT. Im on my 3rd trimester have been doing these things and dont have any marks but I know I can get some.
Good luck and congatulations and remember thats just your baby growing thats the most beatiful thing even with marks You'll look very cute

As the breasts and abdomen grow, most women develop stretch marks across the belly and breasts. These small, depressed streaks of differently textured skin can be pink, reddish-brown or dark brown, depending on the woman’s skin color. Some women also get them on their butt, thighs, hips or breasts. These marks are caused by tiny tears in the tissue that lies just below your skin and helps the skin stretch. There is no way to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy, but you can use lotions and creams while you are getting bigger through the pregnancy to take care of your epidermis (outer layer of skin). Stretch marks usually fade and become less noticeable after delivery. You may see creams to treat stretch marks in the drug store. It isn’t clear whether these creams work.

Despite what people will tell you, you can't prevent stretch marks. You can help with their appearance if you use cocoa butter or Vitamin E. However its not something you can avoid. Some people are lucky and just dont get them but some people aren't and get them.

Rub a lot of lotion on your stomach and drink lots of water. It helps a lot. I know the person up above said if your mom got them you probably will too but that isn't so. My mom got a lot of them and I'm 6 months pregnant and use a lot of lotion and I drink lots of water and I don't have any strech marks or even the faintest line on my stomach.
