The first thing you want to do is a concept map. This can be on a simple piece of paper. What you want is to do is list:
Who- who are the characters? What are their personalities? Are they static or dynamic?
What- what is going on in the play? What's the story? What's your message? What is your style?
Where- What is the setting? Where is it taking place? What does it look like?
When- More setting? What part of the character's life is the play showing?
Why- what is the point of the play? Why do you want to write it?
Then what you want to do is write the introductory paragraph explaining these things and go from there. Remember to keep the characters consistent and to make it like a women's skirt: long enough to get everything covered and short enough to be interesting.
Good Luck!

Start by figuring out the premise of the play. Come up with characters and a general idea of the plot. Do a character sketch for each of the main characters--imagine them like real people. Flesh out your plot by adding interesting events that will all develop towards one exciting moment.
As you write the dialogue, include stage directions so the performers will know how to act and move.
According to the ancient Greeks, a play has six key elements: characters, plot, theme, diction, sound/music, and special effects. Remember to think of these as you write!

You're writing a play. How do you write a play? Sounds a bit riddiculous... ;)
If you don't know maybe the thing you write is not a play...?
