I have 3 guppies in a 2.5 gallon tank. The tank has an undergravel filter and i plan on buying a larger tank when they start reproducing. Should i get a new tank? What size tank should I get? What type of filter should i use for this new tank?

With a air stone and plant, yes. s far as a new tank goes, he bigger the better, You cannot have any sort of breeding operation with less then a ten gallon, but if you go to a twenty, you could buy a tank divider for $8 and have to use only one filter and heater.

no a 2.5 gallon tank it fine for 3 guppies...you wont only have 3 guppies for long tho so if they reproduce often i may try upgrading to a 5 gallon or even a 10..they have all types of undergravel and sponge filters for many different types of tanks and they are safe for the fry..also try getting some water sprites or any other floating plant that is easy to take care of (i use water sprite because the fry love hiding in it, it actually reproduces and grows very quickly, i also found it doesnt need as much light and care as some other freshwater plants)

I'd go with the largest tank you can afford/accomodate. What are you going to do with the babies? You will be overrun with guppies very quickly lol. As far as filters go, I like the Penguins or Marinelands. Rule of thumb, whatever size tank you have, add a 0 at the end, meaning, if you have a 55 gallon tank, you'll want a filter that will produce at least 550 gallons per hour. But, if you have messy fish, like an oscar, you'll want more than that.

I always went by the fish per/gallon thing, also. However, guppies are so very small I think they will be fine for now. When you buy a larger tank, underground filters are great! I would stick with it. I also used, in addition to the underground filter, a bio filter. The Bio filter may not be good for your guppies or their fry, because it is just another source of suction to pull them out of the tank!

Good Luck and Take Care

Guppies are shoal fish. Which means schooling fish. They get lonely if you don't have enough. I reccomend have 6 guppies in a 5 gallon tank.

i could in all probability purely bypass with a million-2 guppies, the tank is small yet whilst the tank is longer than it extremely is tall it would be ok, yet whilst the the tank is tall and not as long, i could in all probability purely get a million. As for ghost shrimp, you will get them at petsmart or puppy co for properly under a million dollar, i payed 33 cents for mine in my 10 gallon. Ghost shrimp are astonishing little adult males and could turn the colour of what they consume. they are quite lively and could even swim in mid water. you are able to desire to in all probability get like 3-5 in there, counting on the size back, in case you have a miles better footprint, the extra you are able to slot in there. another issues to think of roughly, you are able to desire to attempt a betta, they are cool fish and gets alongside effective with your shrimps, or a minimum of mine does. or you are able to desire to even get a dwarf puffer fish and positioned it in there, they are astonishing little adult males and in case you have them obtainable i could look in to those, in specific situations petsmart has them, dwarf puffers are one among my all time widespread fish. in case you prefer, you are able to desire to even attempt to get a small planted tank going, with java moss and java ferns the tank could desire to look quite sturdy. desire this helps

good luck with your guppies. they usually reproduce all the time. even if they are in seperate tanks. they usually stay fairly small though, so don't worry about the tank size.
