I am just starting to build my website and I'm going to need a "search" in it. Can anyone tell me if I need programming for that before I start, or I can add the search later?

There are plenty of open source, free software packages that do searching that will will plug right in to your site. There shouldn't be a need to write one from scratch.

If you're using PHP for your site, try freshmeat.net for a search package.

You can add search functionality at any point during your site development.

If you don't want to do much coding to implement a search function, try a free search service, like www.atomz.com.

You can buy search engines, or you can program them yourself. If you are putting things into a database you'll need to know SQL. If you are using Microsoft servers then you will need to know ASP or ASP.Net. If you are using Apache/Linux servers then you will probably need to know PHP.

I think MS also offer a document search, you'll need to have control of the server.

If you're going to build a website and know you need to search it, design it with that in mind so you don't have to rebuild the whole thing from scratch later.

Well, you can always use Yahoo or Google search on your site, once it's indexed.

There is also a site called JRank that will index your site. It's pretty quick too.
