It means that your conception date could have been miscalculated; the test has a very small window of effectiveness (2 weeks, from wks 16-18, I believe).

It could mean that you're a victim of the HIGH false positive rate.

It could mean there's an increased risk of a problem.

Bottom line: If you're going to love this baby no matter what, tell your doctor so and get on with your life.

My wife had the same thing happen too. The doctors were shocked at the levels of AFP in her system. They were 50 times the limit. They were the highest levels they had ever seen.

We had to go through all kinds of tests, we opted out of the amnio. We did not want to take the risk. We had to do high level ultrasounds too. All showed nothing wrong with our little one. They were all stumped. Liver tests showed no problems as well.

I think that it was a temporary problem with the liver, or her gallbladder acting up. But, I am no Doctor. Did they do the ultrasound to look for any defects with the umbilical cord or abdomen? Also, did they look at the spine yet?

Doesn't mean anything. AFP is just a screening test, which gives you odds on the genetic defects of the baby. If you realy want to find out, you need to do an amnio, otherwise, just wait 'til the baby is born.

If you're not over 30 i wouldnt even elect to have those tests. Everyone I know, and everyone in my family has gotten false positives, and no one birthed a child with an ailment.

They shouldnt even have that test anymore, it does nothing but create unneeded stress and concern.

I opted out of the test and had an Ultrasound to check development instead.

Those have a HIGH rate of false positives. Your dr's will run further tests and I bet all will turn out well. Good luck!
