Kind of like the Big 10 conference which really has 11 teams (or is it 12? I forget), the Wilshire 5000 now has about 6700 stocks. When the index was created in 1974, it had about 5000 stocks.

The index includes virtually every stock that meets these criteria:

1- The firm's HQ is in the US.
2- The stock is actively traded on a US exchange
3- The stock has widely available pricing information.
