The Earth was imparted a spin when the solar system was created. Conservation of momentum states that an object will tend to maintain its momentum (including spin or angular momentum) until an force acts upon it.

The Earth's spin is slowly slowing down, due to tidal forces of the moon and sun. Tidal force is an example of the kind of force that can change an object's angular momentum.
