I am trying to work it out how many variations there be in music as we never hear the same tune composed twice. Although the trained ear may hear the same melody that no one else is atuned to.

I hope you understand what I am getting at, as I am getting confused myself? .

do you mean how many notes in a (major) scale? In the keyof c this would be:
doe = c
ray = d
me = e
far = f
so = g
la = a
tea = b
doe = c
however you said the tonic and this is the 5th note of the scale - which in c would be g. But so to far is just a tone. Unless you meant how many notes in a scale. In which case the answer is 8. In a standard major scale. However there are other types, for example a pentatonic scale. I hope this helps...

i'm a musician, and i'm having a hard time understanding your question. i think the answer to your question is 8 musical notes. however the 8 notes have a sharp and a flat. So i guess the answer would be 13...i guess.
