They're lively and active fish, and don't grow to be too large. I've never had them, but from what I understand, they're prolific breeders and it doesn't take much to get them to breed.
Bettas, guppies, and most of the other fish mentioned by other answerers are tropical fish and should, by all rights, be kept in minimum of 76 degree-temperature water.

You don't have many options there.
Bettas 75-86
Mollies 72-82
Platys 64-77
swordtails 64-82
Neon tetras 68-74
Plecos 73-79
Killifish 73-79
Danios and minnows 73-77
I'd give you some more but these could go into tanks less then 20 gallons (but not all together)
Here you can find the varieties of them and pictures

You can keep guppies , However, if your aquarium doesn't go below 75 degrees, which i'm sure your house temp, doesn't go below that you can keep any type of fish. Most all fish live between 75 and 82 degrees.

betta fish are pretty and can live with a variety of types of fish, just not other bettas. They do fine in any water temp above about 72 degrees.

How big is the tank? And approximately how cold is it?
