Do you mean during the time of the Industrial Revolution? Read a little Charles Dickens. For the upper class there were in-home tutors, boarding schools and then Colleges. Middle class families might be able to send their children to aprox. the 8th grade. Usually they went to trade schools. Lower class children were lucky to be indentured out. In any case the Industrial Revolution created "work houses" where children were pressed into labor at a very early age negating any chance for formal education.
