well the truth is that there two parts in this...
1> free of cost advertisement of their site (i., for google and yahoo, by mouth talk of people and people encouraging people to go for this or that particular site and have their accounts registered..) and
2> revenue is generated from the advertisements that are posted on these sites, by various companies and internet sites....(one advertisement on this website is viewed by as many as 50-70% of the sites registered users and nearly 90% of the visitors)
ok now did u get the idea behind this thing...........

Because it generates internet traffic... Sponsors take care of the rest. When you go to a FREE website, and see ads... It's those folks who pay for the site. The Web traffic generates business. That's why.

businesses pay to have their site placed at the top right for the search key words you put in.
