If they are raised together they get along fine.
But the problem is that the body language of dogs and cats is totally different.
E.g. if a cat likes somebody it will half close its eyes and turn its head away a bit, as an invitation to come nearer.
Dogs look at interesting things with eyes wide open, and just go to investigate. For a cat, staring eyes are threatening behaviour...
So there would be many misunderstandings, and once a dog/cat has had a bad experience with the other species, that's it for life, most of the time.

Fun question.
It depends.
Some cats hate any other animal in the house. They don't even like other cats.
Some dogs are the same way.
Some dogs like to chase anything smaller than them.
If you get the dog as a puppy, the cat will teach the dog some respect. It helps if the cat still has front claws and can defend itself.
I have lots of stories of cats and dogs getting along together, but usually there's a bit of sibling rivalry. My sister had a cat and a dog. The cat would sit in the window and rat on the dog if the dog was outside digging holes or something. But if the cat got outside, my sister would send the dog outside. The dog would catch the cat and hold it pinned to the ground so my sister could come over and bring kitty back in the house.

No not really, I have a Maltese poodle and she is about 2 years old we got a cat that is round about 2 months old, the cat was a bit sceptical about the dog the first day. That night they slept together the following night my dog had milk and fed the cat! My dog never had babies or milk yet ! So now about 6 months later the two never leave each others sides. If you look for the dog you find the cat and vica verca.

It's a myth. Dogs and cats who are raised together get along just find, sometimes even sleep in a heap together. It's more strange dogs and cats that don't get along. My dog will chase strange dogs and cats out of our yard to protect his territory, but gets along just fine with our cat.

I have owned cats and dogs in the same household. Generally, if they're raised together, dogs and cats will get along just fine. I've seen the dog laying down curled up with the cat, licking its ears affectionately, and vice versa. Normally dogs that chase/eat cats are dogs that haven't been raised around them and do not see them as family members.

Hey I've had cats and dogs together for a long time. I even had a dog that nursed kittens. We had a male out side dog who shared his dog house with the cats every winter, with no problems. I think its just what they get used to.

I've heard of cases like that, where they either get along or pay no real attention to each other. They say that if the two are raised in each other's company, there will be no problem later on.

confident, cats and canines can get alongside. It relies upon on the character of the cat and canines as to no count in the event that they are going to get alongside. a particular breed would not constantly propose they are going to get alongside greater effective with cats. go on your nearest animal guard and undertake a canines. one that's older and not a puppy would be greater mellow and much less complicated on your cat to get alongside with. additionally, guard canines are often greater effective around cats, different canines, and young ones. if that they had strategies-set issues then they could no longer be accompanied out, for this reason they'd not be on the guard. yet go on your nearest guard and ask regarding the canines, they are sure to have somewhat some to choose for from that gets alongside properly with your cat.
