I was wondering the same with our first, and a sis-in-law told me you'll know. But really I didn't, my first sign was cramping with some diarhea, then when I had "gone", I had to wipe away some yucky mucus, which caught my attention, that that must be the plug, so I called the hospital, and they told me to wait around for another half hour, (unless my water broke), and in the mean time if it got worse or if it just was diarhea. But believe me, it just kept getting worse, so we went in ,in about an hour.Had the baby 3 hours later. So if ever in doubt call your doctor, or the ob. at your hospital.

It's often not possible to pinpoint exactly when "true" labor begins because early labor contractions might start out feeling like the Braxton Hicks contractions you may have been noticing for weeks. It's likely that labor is under way, however, when your contractions become increasingly longer, stronger, and closer together. They may be as far apart as every ten minutes or so in the beginning, but they won't stop or ease up no matter what you do. And in time, they'll become more painful and closer together. In some cases, though, the onset of strong, regular contractions comes with little or no warning — it's different for every woman and with every pregnancy.

There are many signs of labor, Here is a wed site to look at they can tell you far more than I can Www.yppo.com
But here is what I know
1. Dull lower back pain
2. Spotting and/or Bloody show (small amount of blood in pee and/or underpants)
3. A large or small Gush of water
4. Panites getting wet Like water leaking into panties
5. Contractions that increase in pain and contraction that get closer together
6. Dialation
Have someone time your contraction if you have any and tell someone if you have dull lower back pain that increases
There are contractions Called Braxtion Hicks And this Is flase labor you get these when your body is preping for the real thing. Also watch when you wipe or look in your underwear for a mucaus with tinted red blood like in it this means you mucaus plug has poped out this means you can go into labor within 24 hrs to 4weeks after it pops out
Good luck and check out this Site it is wonderful

There is no "about to!" When you go into labor you will have twinges of pain - usually in the abdomen but sometimes in the lower back as well. When you notice the intensity of the twinges getting worse and they are coming every so often without fail then you know you are in labor. Of course, if your water breaks - and it will gush - that's also a good sign. So is a baby's body part sticking out! My Grandmother - who had 18 kids - swears she would get the urge to clean everything in sight and had super energy usually about a week before she had a baby. Me? I was usually cussing about a week before. Tiny body BIG BIG BABY!

Look down...are you standing in a puddle? If you are, you're either going into labor, or your still in the shower. Just to be safe, call the doctor!

You won't know until you are in labor. There are signs that it will start soon--bloody show, expulsion of the mucus plug, etc--but unless your water breaks or you start having contractions of increasing frequency and intensity, you won't have any other signs.

You start to have contractions. They feel like cramping from a period and should come and go. Getting stronger over time. Make sure you time them. They should be pretty consistent. People may say it is when your water breaks but mine never did on it's own.

You get contractions very close together, they start in your back and work over the entire belly, they become regular and dont slow down for atleast an hour. You get a bloody show and/or your water breaks.

you will know when it is time. If you start to feel contractions you should call you doctor. The doctor will tell you what signs to look for. And the doctor will tell you that you hould start timing you contractions ( dr will tell you how far apart they need to be to go to the hospital) Trust me when it's time you'll know.
Good Luck
