The Milky Way (a translation of the Latin Via Lactea, in turn derived from the Greek Γαλαξίας (Galaxias), sometimes referred to simply as "the Galaxy"), is a barred spiral galaxy which forms part of the Local Group.

Democritus (450 BC–370 BC) was the first known person to claim that the Milky Way consists of distant stars.

The term "milky" originates from the hazy band of white light appearing across the celestial sphere visible from Earth, which comprises stars and other material lying within the galactic plane.

It is possible (a personal opinion, this) that the biblical phrase "a Land flowing with Milk and Honey" is implied by the choice of metaphor: a Promised Land and the Milky Way is thought of as the long road homewards to attain it, for nomadic or migratory peoples,

You may perhaps know the phrase lactic acid? And lactation? And lactose? (Lactose makes up around 2-8% of the solids in milk.) These words are all etymologically derived from the Latin word for milk,

Milk is also used as an image in the phrase "Milk of Magnesia" and clearly has associations with something that is good for you, as exploited by the adverts for the confectionery bar Milky Way, purportedly "the sweet you CAN eat between meals, without spoiling your appetite"

The milky way was named by the greeks as Galaxies Kuklos, or the milky circle. the romans changed the name to Via Lactea, or the Milky road, or as we now call it ,the milky way.
