'Without paying additional cost for service' means that you want to use the existing DSL connection that you have with your PC. If thats right than you need to have a wireless card installed with your lappy as well as on your PC.
There are wireless cards available in the market (external as well as PCMCIA interface).
Configure your lappy to share the intrenet connection from your PC throuch the wireless network cards.
You are done.

Does your laptop have built in wireless? Most do, but if not, you will need a wireless card for your laptop. Either way, you will need a wireless router. The wireless router will accept an ethernet cable from your DSL modem, and then you can connect to the desktop with another ethernet cable. At that point you configure the router, following the instructions supplied. Usually, this is VERY easy. Once configured, then you should be able to pick up the network on your laptop.
Range depends on how many and what kinds of walls and other obstructions you have in your house. I can work in all but the farthest corner of a 4000 sq ft single level wood construction house

i live in ohio, and i have road runner high speed online. my husband has a desktop, and i have a laptop. we have a wireless router we bought for $80 (very, very cheap) and we plug our router right into our internet cable box the cable people gave us. there was alot of stuff we had to set up for the wireless network, it took several days just to get right, but now i have it so my wireless router has a built in firewall, and nobody but me can get onto the wireless network. so i can take my laptop anywhere i want in the house, and everythings ok. i found my wireless router at a video game shop on clearence, they were trying to get rid of all their PC stuff, because it wasnt selling. but you can find a wireless router at just about any office or computer store. i got the Microsoft brant, because its more compatable, and we have less issues than we would with a lesser known brand name wireless router. you probably wont find one for less than $80. it will probably run you at least $100. but i dont know, i bought my router a couple years ago, maybe the technology has gotten cheaper since i last looked. when shopping for a wireless router, turn the boxes over, and look at the fine print. is it compatable with whatever system your running on your computer? (i.e., windows 2000, windows XP, macintosh OSX) does it look like you could set it up without a problem? wireless networks can be very tricky, and unless you or someone you know, works in the computer technology field, you will more than likely have questions about how to set it up. and last but not least, make sure your wireless router has a return policy. if you happen to miss an important detail while shopping for a wireless router, and its somehow not compatible with the laptop you have, you want to be sure you can bring it back, so your not stuck with a very expensive but useless toy.

You need a wireless acsess point.
Many come built into routers these days.
You also need a wireless adaptor for your laptop...there very well might be one built in.
Also, look around on your laptop to see if your neighbors have any unsecured acsess points.

you can buy a wireless router and have wireless internet within your house.
If you meant to have wireless internet wherever you go you need to pay for the wireless access . (and access points are not everywhere)

Buy a Linksys wireless broadband router. It connects to your incoming dsl modem. Then your desktop plugs into the router.
PS. Distance is determined by your own environment, so of course, who knows? How high you put the router, size and construction of your home, etc. www.linksys.com
