Other people said Gantz, but I'd like to add something. When Gantz premiered in Japan, they actually had to censor it because they considered it to be too graphic to air uncut. That is very significant because Japanese audiences are used to unedited material, but Gantz was, apparently, a whole other ball of wax, so to speak.

Perhaps Barefoot Gen...it vividly portrays the horror that is nuclear war.
For non-fiction *manga,,I dont think they did an anime...yet*: The Ring. That is one creepy manga! In some ways it's worse than Ringu *the original movie*
