Salamu alaikum.

I know that most of the 1.1 billion Muslims in the world do not agree with radical extremism, neither with organizations like al-Qaeda, who give a bad name to Islam by justifying terrorism with their misguided interpretation of certain suras in the holly Quran (I am just quotting Muslims who anwered my previous question http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

My question is, why peaceful Muslims do not go out to the streets to demonstrante against those who tarnish the peaceful nature of Islam? Would your lives be in danger if you did so?

I clarify that I am a Buddhist. I am asking this question with all due respect, because I am interested in promoting understanding to overcome the current impasse.

I shall be grateful if you could let Muslims answer this question, since we should all know what they actually think. Thanks!

When have you ever seen anyone of a particular faith demonstrate against their fellow believers? They will let their opinions be known, or they may even write letters to the editors of newspapers etc. to show that they do not support the radical elements of their religion, but are seldom motivated to overtly demonstrate in support of the status quo, or the view of the majority. It is those that feel dispossessed and think they have little say in the power structure that feel compelled to make their voice heard in a strident, and dramatic manner.

We all understand you're Buddhist, we all understand you're respectful, we all understand you're interested in promoting understanding. But seriously, in a word, it's FEAR! In some countries, especially in the mid-east, merely speaking out - especially against ppl or policies in power - can get you killed.

What is it you expect to learn from asking the same Q, albeit in a different way? What is it you are looking for? What are you trying to accomplish? Most muslims will not answer your Q's by telling you what is in their hearts. Not b/c they don't want to, but b/c they haven't the time to waste, they are too busy trying to live.

As humans, time is the only thing we own, unfortunately, even we don't know how much we have in our bank. Use yours wisely. Just promote YOUR point of view! Let us try to understand you. For all we know YOU could be the next Mother Theresa, the future Gandhi, a yet to be known Dali Llama. Tell us what YOU think! Either we'll understand or we won't. That's life, that's living. Be in it! I apologize if I come across as bitter, I hope you understand. No pun intended.

i think of that's the easy fact that they understand that their opposition will in user-friendly terms convey greater controversy. that's totally unhappy that extremists from ANY faith use the call of their God (s) to do what they do out of their own fears and selfishness. The extremist Muslim thought is that it grew to become into fought for earlier with violence, and now it may desire to be achieved back. So unhappy... so unhappy for the non-believers and for people who're in seek of the certainty. circumstances like this do no longer help, they simply make further and further human beings hate a God and walk away with out ever understanding the certainty.

Sometimes they do. And sometimes they rebel against fanatic Islamic regimes (like the rebellions in the Bihac enclave in Bosnia Herzegovina). Peaceful Christians don't always demonstrate or rebel against fanatic ones (sometimes they do, though), not to mention Jews. So I guess you got the answer.

For the same reason peaceful Christians do not demonstrate against radical extremists in their own midst. It seems that our own continued existence seems more assured when others who are most like us fight to continue their own existence. Even if we disagree with them and feel that they are harmful to the image and standing of our group, we ultimately profess what they profess, and so in that respect, we are one of them. We do not reject them, and so by default, we accept them.
