TV now is totally a garbage in-garbage out scenario. People are fed a steady diet of sex, violence, fear and then everybody wonders why the world is so insane. Go figure....you feed your mind filth and filth gets into your mind and heart and comes out in your actions.

It is almost impossible to agree more with your comment. The only thing I might add is that the careful and discerning consumer of TV programming can find some remarkably intelligent programs among the insultingly banal fluff. The best bets as far as I am concerned are the old movies on TCM and AMC, often National Geographic Channel will have interesting, informative programming as will ETV, occasionally. I also enjoy things on A&E, History Channel and Bravo from time to time as well as sports and the occasional Food TV, since I am a caterer on the side.
In fact, i think the root of the problem is that most TV programming is dictated by the marketplace and the marketplace, particularly for network TV, is for the most part made up of hip-hop "culture" loving, "reality" show believing, very poorly educated kids and young adults who lack the intellectual curiosity to want to know more about the realities of Iraq than they want to know about the realities of the pop-"culture" stars and today's Hollywood drivel.
The admittedly VERY slow solution is to somehow reform the educational system in our country. I am a HUGE supporter of our Public Education system, but believe a massive overhaul of it is absolutely imperative if we are remain a viable competitor in the world economy. I also believe a massive overhaul of the Health Care system is also due. But that is another subject, isn't it.....

I've been cable free about 5 years. Whether it's 6 channels, or 150, there is rarely something on tv that is not a waste of time... i hate commericals and it seems about 20 minutes of every hour is commercial time. I have moved to talk radio. love it.

Are you sure your research is accurate? i observed a child sitting in front of the TV all day. the parents did the job of reading and talking with her since she was a toddler. but they both had to go to work leaving her with TV the baby seater. the child is in high school now with commendable grades.
contrast, i saw first hand, a child who was not allowed access to TV except occasional discovery channel etc. his grades in school are poor and has difficulty in understanding plots if exposed to cinema or TV serials.
too much of soap opera will naturally dull your brain. i found out, the intelligent are unable to watch soap serials - the prerogative goes to few housewives and dumb heads. middle path generally gives the best results with no censorship.

I couldn't agree with you more. I do turn on the T.V. occasionally, but as it seems I do not even like the news, there goes that. The other programs, meant to entertain, are not very entertaining to me either. I do like to watch Who's Line is it Anyway because the participants off the cuff originality is amusing. I am tired of Oprah, she seems to be more interested at times in building her ego than anything. Well there you go,someone who understands how you feel.

It's because smart people are hard to come by.
90% of the narcissistic stupidity in this country originates on TV. Everything is about self and the virtues of arrogance.

I didn't watch tv for many years, and admired the Kingdom of Conga because they didn't have television. But I now download a lot of great stuff on my computer, and watch it through my flat tv set.

You are not alone, most programs are an offence to the intelligence of the viewer. Most movies are so boring that they aren't worth watching.
