Quite a difficult question as you haven't given enough details!! For instance, are you planning on returning home every weekend or are you going to a uni on the other side of the world!!
Take some confidence, some common sense, some funny stories / jokes, and yourself. That should get you meeting enough people so that you can enjoy your 3 years!!
Good luck!

Welcome to the best time of your life, hands down!
You will most likely be sharing halls with other freshers as unis generally try to shack these people together. Have fun meeting your new roomies and take them for a beer (or better yet, buy a few cold ones and distribute - you'll be a hit in no time).
Somethings are provided in halls, but some are not. Check with your uni as to what is provided so you can plan/buy ahead. Generally, you should bring with you:
-Fitted sheet, duvet cover, pillowcase (most unis provide duvets and pillows)
-Hangers (wardrobes generally in each room)
-A pot, a pan, a plate, a bowl, a mug, a tumbler and a set of cutlery if your halls are self catering. Leave this until last as sometimes, you can get the whole flat with you and go shpping for all the kitchen stuff as a group (and thus split the bill).
-Clothing, a towel and washcloth/loofah, toiletry products
-Posters or pictures for a personal touch.
- A PC or laptop (optional) as most rooms now have internet access you can pay for in tandem with a phone service.
-Plenty of money (food, booze, phone cards, etc)
-The usual school stuff (pens, paper (lined and unlined), binders, polypockets, etc. Don't worry as all unis have a shop you can get this from on campus.
-No candles, oil burners or incense. These are usually prohibited.
That's all I can think of at the moment.
Several pieces of advice for you:
-Lidl is your best friend. Never ever underestimate the power of a week's shopping for £10.
-Baked beans on toast and spaghetti hoops will become a staple.
-Never mix the grape and the grain.
-Don't try a kebab unless you have had a lot to drink. They are revolting unless you have already lost your ability to taste.
And finally...
-Never miss an opportunity to have a good time. Even a silly time. My flatmates put on rubber gloves, boas and tiaras and paraded around the courtyard in their PJs and dressing gowns. I wish I would have joined in.

Take things that remind you of home to stave off homesickness. It got me really badly after the first week and then again about 3 months in. After that you've established yourself but those first few nights can be horrid especially if you've never lived away from home before. I would also take some cheap kitcheware (your housemates will trash it so quality items are not required) and also maybe a padlock for a door or cupboard if you're living in halls. Other good things are quick wipes for any dirty surfaces and on the spot carpet cleaners, as well as maybe a spare lightbulb, as they will inevitably blow within the first week.

Depends on what you're allowed to have in halls - fridges and toastie makers are great if you can have them.
An alarm clock, extra lamps, towels, spare sheets so you won't be left with nothing clean if you don't get round to washing them too often. Pictures from home, other stuff you might want around as a reminder of home like stuffed toys and the like. Maybe take some nice food (homemade cake or something cheesy like that) to offer around to other people as an ice breaker....or just some booze if that's your style!

Get contents insurance and if you are not going into halls make sure you have a tv licence for your house.
Try to remember, study comes first, parties and going out comes second.
Enjoy yourself and mix, you will meet a lot of people in your first year, mainly in the first month.
Go to the freshers fair.
Don't be afraid to ask people questions if you don't know something.
Very best of luck with your studies and have a great time.

Open up a student bank account so that you have an overdraft if you need it for emergencies.
Get insurance to cover anything valuable that you're taking with you like a laptop or even your iPod or mobile.
Take a box with headache tablets, plasters etc, in case you need them.
i'm so jealous of you cause I'm a student but I'm living at home! Have a ball! xx
