Edema is common amongst pregnant women, however it seems like your wife's case is excessive.

There is a condition called Toximia or pre-eclamsia that can cause high blood pressure and selling. You should really consult your doctor about anything as extensive as what you described.

She may just retain fluids more than most during pregnancy.

Good LUCK!

First off, it's called edema. And a lot of women have that problem during pregnancy. Sometimes, we retain water and our bodies don't have any place to put it, or release it so we just hold it and for some of us, it causes our bodies to swell up. Some women get lucky and don't have this problem and some do. Natural selection is what I call it. And just because you don't have certain symptoms in your first pregnancy, doesn't mean you won't have others in your second. There may not be a way to stop this from happening because when pregnant, the doctors prefer us to drink twice as much water as we normally would or do. So, if your wife retains water, it's no big deal. She will stop swelling eventually and when the baby's born, she'll return to normal. Good luck.

She needs to drink a lot of water, monitor her salt intake and stay off her feet as much as possible. My hands and feet do the exact same thing and I'm only 25wks. I found that after my day is over, if I prop my feet up and do nothing for a couple of hours before bedtime, that helps immensely. Another thing she can try is elevating her legs and her hands to a level above her heart. So when she's lying down, put pillows under her feet and hands so that they can "drain" and they won't be so swollen. Good luck, I know how much that sucks.

I too had a lot of water retention when I was pregnant. She should put her feet up at the end of the night, try wearing support pantyhose, drink water, cut out salt and high sodium foods or beverages.
If the swelling becomes real bad ... (one way to test is to press in on feet/ankles if it leaves an indentation ) she should talk to her doctor about it ... this is a sign of toxemia and may require closer medical attention. I had toxemia.

Watch the sodium intake. Get more rest and elevate the feet. Also, if this is persistant, her doctor should test her for a condition that exists only to pregnant women where the hands and feet swell called toxemia.

Just to be safe call the Dr. (especially if the swelling happens on her face) It could be a warning sign of pre-eclempsia which if left untreated can lead to seizures. Has her Blood pressure been up recently? That is another sign. My Dr put me on BP meds in June and they worked well for my elevated BP and swelling, but just this last week he put me off work as my BP went sky high, swelling reoccured, my reflexes were "compromised" and I had trace protein in my urine. These are all warning signs of pre eclempsia, but since I have been off work, on modified bed rest, I feel so much better and my BP and swelling has improved.
Please watch for these other warning signs, but call Dr. especially if the swelling happened "all of a sudden".
Take care and good luck.

Raise her arms and legs above her head, pretty much. My mother and I both swelled up so much during pregnancy that we could take my jewelry and make impressions in our skin that would last for like an hour. They diagnosed me with pre-eclampsia, but never really gave me anything to treat it, and my mother was never treated, had six children, and we and my daughter are all fine. *shrug* Just elevate the body parts that start swelling and it'll keep it down to a tolerable level.

Stay away from salty foods or foods with lots of sodium. Drink lots of water! Also elevate feet. Try to sleep or lay down on the left side. This should be checked by her obgyn. Good Luck!

that's very common, she's retaining water. elevate her feet will help them some. the best way to stop this is to have the baby. This is starting the miserable time where she's going to feel like an elephant sometimes, be extra sensitive tell her how beautiful and glowing she is and how much you love her and what she's sacrificing for your family and have a beautiful baby. you guys are in the final stretch it's almost over

Happy Baby

Can't really stop it. It'll go away after she has the baby. I had it terrible and it got worse when I drank pop or ate something with a lot of sodium or salt. My rings hurt and I could make fingerprints in my ankles, and I'm not normally a heavy person, but I looked terrible. She'll lose a lot of weight just from the water retention. She'll like that. Just make sure that you treat her like you adore her no matter what she looks like. Being pregnant is terrible on a person's body, hair, attitude. It's temporary, so make sure you love her the entire time.
