"YES!!!!" Everytime, too!!! I used to be a clean-freak, until, I got hit by a car, in 2001, and then things slowed down, but I used to make sure my house was "spotless" at all times!! My Virgo, sister who, is a "Perfectionist" used to pop over to visit me, unanounced, no call, first.. And she always commented on how I did it ... With raising 3 young children alone, working two jobs, and still having an emaculately clean house!! Those were the "Good ol' days!!" I had so much energy, and so much, physical "UMPF!!" I guess thats the only way, I could have survived those hard-times... Life was not easy, for me in those days.....But, I'm thankful, for the experiences I went through, before my accident.. Now, I'm trying to challenge my memory, and am a "Full-time" student.. I ended up with lots of medal nuts & screws in me, and "short-term" memory loss, from being hit, by that truck, but, it still does not slow me down!!! I'm not as active as I was before 2001, but I do everything in my power not to let my effects from the "Hit" slow my life down too much!!! And I'm actually doing much better than I expected to do, in school !!! So, this is good... Satan, tried to steal my "Passion" for my walks!! But, He's under my feet, now!!! And I'm a walking breathing miracle.. From being listed as a "Jane Doe" to walking around able to clean my house, and take my walks!! God has plans for my life, I feel, He's not done with me, yet !!! So, I'm living life to the "Fullest' because none of us are promised tomorrow!!! Good-luck, with your house, cleaning.. Just put some dancing music, on .. And get you some iced-tea, or your favorite drink.. And clean away!!! That always helped me!! Having music on, makes it seem like "Less work" more fun !!! Smile!! Hope you have a"Wonderful time with your company, and that all of your efforts wont go unnoticed!!"

I actually invite people over and THEN clean the house. Sometimes when I know the place is a disaster and have no motivation to pick it up, I will even invite someone over for the motivation TO clean it up, lol. I don't mind looking at it crappy, but don't want the rest of the world to know! :P
And usually when someone else comes in and makes it messy, it's just clutter mess. When I clean it before hand I go nuts and do the stuff I normally ignore, like sweep around the sides of the fridge and mop behind the toliet, roflmao.

I used to be like that, but these days I just have learned a more routine cleaning regimen so that my house is (almost) always clean every day - top to bottom...and I don't have to put myself through that any longer. I work long hours so housework used to get back-burner-ed and out of hand..then if company was coming over, I'd have to bust me ol' butt as you say. But ...I just finally set up for myself a schedule where certain things get done EVERY day..(no matter what)...a little bit of extra time on the house each day - keeps crazed mad cleaning days away if company is coming over.
But yes, I know - it's crazy to go crazy cleaning and after a party or company is over you must clean..again..but who wants to invite folks to a messy house?..lol Our friends and family are worth cleaning up after...some might even pitch in and help! ; -)

Because we are all worried about appearance and what other people think about us. That being said, I do the same thing. I try to keep the house clean all the time but I always do extra dusting and make sure everything is in order when company comes over.

Yes. My wife and I are so behind on cleaning because we are too busy working, cooking, playing/taking care of "they boy". There is never time to give the house a thurough cleaning. So, when we have invited people over, we are busting our collective asses to get the place in tip-top shape.
We clean it so we don't look like the slobs we are, and to make people think we are awesome because we can do all the things I mentioned above AND keep and extra clean house (which is a load of crap!)

Having company is a good motivator to clean the house. It makes you feel good knowing that it is clean when they arrive.
Look at it this way, the house will be clean and not need too much work after they leave.
Good Luck

Usually. It's just a way of saying you care about the impression you make on them but also it's a good way of making yourself do it. If it is family or really close friends we don't always do major cleaning because they understand how busy we are!
PS - Are you from the south. I'm just asking because you said you are "fixing to go clean". I used to say that when I lived in Texas!

Depending on who is coming we are sometimes comfortable leaving the house as is; but, most of us do it to make a good impression on our family and friends and if your house gets messy with the company that arrives, they can see it wasn't just you, it was a combination of both or themselves. I do pick up a little no matter who is coming though.

it's better to me to have a clean house to let others come and make a mess than to invite them into a messy house
it gives off the wrong impression
and it makes it seem as though we dont know how to cater to guess and keep a house tidy

No, I don't bust my butt to get the house clean; but then again, I work so much that my house never has a chance to get dirty (except for dust)! lol But if I were you, I'd make the house presentable for guests, then after the mess is made and they leave, then bust butt to clean.
