When you turn on the heater it is drawing the heat from the engine, which in turn cools the engine. You probably have a stuck thermostat, they are occasionally faulty from the store. Did you replace it or did an auto repair shop do it?

Have you been watching the coolant level? If you have a leak in your coolant system, that would be a problem. My Jeep had this issue.

I also had the issue where the radiator fins were so damaged that I couldn't get sufficient cooling. That was an expensive repair -- they had to replace the radiator.

As for why the temperature goes down when you turn on the heater -- the heater works by taking heat out of the coolant and heating the hair that gets blown into the car. This would be normal behavior. You're moving some of the heat out from under the hood and blowing it into the car.

You definitely have a problem in your cooling system. I don't think it's the thermostat.

Remember also that your car probably has two radiators, one behind the other. One is for the engine coolant and the other is for your air conditioner. One of them may be perfectly good while the other could be severely damaged and not doing a good job anymore.

Good luck.

the reason the temp goes down when the heat is on is because some of the water from the radiator is routed into the heater. inside the heater is a smaller radiator and a fan blows air trough it and into a duct. essentially the heater is just a small radiator. what has probably happened is your radiator has a blockage in it some where. or there is debris on your radiator fins preventing air from passing through it. both are not difficult to solve. try flushing your water in the radiator out with clean water and a cleaner. this would mean draining it and refilling it. while you do this spray with a hose the opposite direction that air flows and brush the fins with a stiff broom. this will remove debris and allow air to flow through better.

Thermostat is bad. The reason that your temp drops when you turn your heat on is because you are drawing some of the hot air away from the engine.

Thermostat

The heater core that supplies heat to the cabin of your car operates just like a mini radiator, that is, it gives off heat. So when you turn on the heat inside the car, the fan blows heat off of the heater core, thereby reducing the temperature of the antifreeze circulating through it. This "cooler" antifreeze then travels back to the engine and lowers the operating temperature.

Your Thermostat is probally bad. If your thermostat doesn't open at a certain degree then all of the heat is stuck and has no where to go. If you want you can just take it out and replace it to see. They usally pretty reasonable to replace. Good luck

check temp sensor. make sure fan is running.watch fingers. you flushed system and put 50/50 antifreeze/water right. Put thermostat in boiling water on stove with candy or meat thermometer ..should open between 185 and 200

It goes down because the heater cores is acting like a little additional radiator and dumping out more of the engine heat.
