Obviously it is an un-nerving topic, but it is a concept that held true through the cold-war with the Soviet Union.
The idea is that if I build and have as many bombs as you do, then we both know that we won't use them because if you send them then so will I and visa-versa.
It's a documented theory that was used throughout the 70's, 80's, 90's.
Where it gets scary, is that this concept was used with actual countries/military powers which abide by the Geneva Convention.
Terrorists are not a country of note and don't play by any rules. If they get hands on a bomb, the above concept wouldn't apply I would think.
But there are thousands of nukes across the world that haven't been used and peace has been kept between countries who have them.
Take it for what it's worth.

Let us hope so. It was feared a couple of years ago that Pakistan and India would have a nuclear confrontation, but it didn't happen. It is interesting to note. In all the years that countries have had nuclear weapons, only one country actually used them in warfare. The United States dropped two bombs on an already defeated Japan unnecessarily, killing many thousands of men, women and children who posed no threat to America. That is the blackest day in American history. Perhaps they are a safeguard. Any country that uses one on another country faces total destruction from the rest of the world that has them. Le'ts hope we never have to find out.

no, world peace can only happen when the minds of individual people are set on making peace. a world without nuclear weapons but still filled with hate is not a peaceful world at all--so in the end it has nothing to do with weapons, it has all to do with thinking.

It does, most of the time. But once a lunatic gets power in a state with nuclear weapons, I'm not so sure.

i think world peace and freedom are inversely proportional. if people are free to make choices for themselves, some of those choices are bound to piss people off. if we are to have world peace, it would have to be forced and dictated. people aren't peaceful, by nature. so...the only thing that would increase the chance of world peace is a one world tyrannic dictatorship.
