Would I call it racist? No, unfortunate? Yes. Sadly, American culture has, more than any other, treated blacks with a disdain that still permeates the society to this day. A Miss Black America is not racism but is a response to it. Blacks rightly feel excluded from much of white American society, it therefore makes sense that they would want to celebrate their own culture. Now the problem conversely is whether blacks would tolerate a Miss White America. It would be interesting to see the answer to that. At the end of the day, every minority and majority has to find whatever balance in society they can, if not, sooner or later it will blow up in their faces.

First, it is wise to understand the MEANING of a word before you use it.
RACISM - the PREJUDICE that members of one race are intrinsically SUPERIOR to members of other races 2: DISCRIMINATORY or ABUSIVE behavior towards members of another race.
Is Miss Black America trying to prove that they are superior to members of other races? Discriminatory or abusive?
Before you answer that, here is the definition of discriminatory: to make a distinction in favor of or against a person or thing on the basis of the group, class, or category to which the person or thing belongs rather than according to actual merit; show partiality.
I don't think they are in favor of or against any other race, either. This is not a ploy to initiate racial tension or aggression. It has nothing to do with OTHER races. They are simply giving honor to their OWN.
As a BLACK woman, I can tell you that we are a race that has not only been afflicted (though I'm personally OVER that piece), but in the process, we have become divided...lots of history behind how/when this happened, and I really don't feel like getting into all that...
Nevertheless, because we lack in unity, we have put wheels in motion that would provoke MORE unity amongst our people. In this effort, we support OURSELVES. We ARE a minority, which in itself shows we fall short of SOMETHING (?). After all, WHY should there be a majority/minority? Better yet, why IS there a majority/minorty? THAT, My Dear, is food for thought!
Further, we are not the ONLY (minority) group that has it's own promotions.
Have you ever watched a national network called Univisior? It is ALL Hispanic and for the Hispanic community. It does not berate or abuse other races. The list goes on, but I think you get the point.
It is not racism. It is unity, honor and appreciation within a race.
Peace to you.

Call it what you want, but the majorityof black women don't have the common miss america body. Black women are often called fat, even when they're not, because certain parts of their bodies are fuller then others. Miss black america pageants have different runway walks with soul also because that's something in our culture. Different types of talent and categories. We all are equal as human beings, but our differences are in culture and heritage. We should be able to express our differences in positive ways in a society that doesn't always think positivly of us. I mean I've never seen a black girl as the irish princess on the st. patricks day float in their parades, But I don't get upset about it, because they have they're own culture and they should be able to express it without it being racism. I'm so sick of everyone else being able to exude the beauty of their own culture and heritage, but when black peole do it, it's so wrong. We are entitled just like everyone else to express our view of beauty. There is no rule that says white women can't be part of the miss black america pageant, but you don't see a lot of white women fighting to be a part of it so unless you go and protest or try to be involved and get rejected then don't yell to the hills racism.

It is racist, they also get Black Business phone books where they are advised to support black businesses and boycot white run businesses. If any other people did this they would be up on charges? Nobody else does this? It is going on all the time by every minority group around and is supported very well by government. another case of divide and rule.

The Miss America pagent is not an emphasis on black culture, which apparently some people felt there needed to be something for.
I should be able to make a Gouda lover's club even though there may be a Cheese lover's organization. It's not racist, it's specialized, and directed.

Political correctness. Everybody is special except the majority (race, religion, mainstream culture, etc.) which can be attacked at will. But any attack on a "victim" group will bring the wrath of the PC establishment upon you.

The dominant culture, both power-wise and money-wise will always have to accept that minority cultures will have the desire to self-segregate in certain situations. Just work it into the equation. If Black persons or Asian persons had settled this country and the whites had been drug over in slave ships, and undergone the gruesome history that the American blacks did, the roles would be reversed, have no doubt.

Who cares? It's a beauty pagent. Nothing good comes out of them anyways. All you win is a fake tiara and bunch of roses.

Anything that excludes anybody, solely on the basis of race, is racist. They can justify it any way they want to, but it's still racist, pure and simple.
