No seriously though..... I think what you should do is not leave it so long next time... I always feel that the whole process takes too long if you delay...
Get your application in early and avoid disappointment....

After you call the exterminator (if you see one rat, you have many more you don 't see) you need him or her to show you where they be getting in. If you live in apartment, the building super may need to be contacted. In a private home, nearby construction can force rats and field mice to seek indoor shelter as their outdoor homes have been disturbed. After your infestation has been cleared, and you are confident that the areas where the rats entered has been contained, you need to go through your entire kitchen and get rid of all the food that the rat(s) may have eaten or gnawed at. Clean the insides of every cabinet thoroughly with disinfectant. Make sure there is no fecal matter on your shelves, in your closets, and in your cabinets. Wear a mask and rubber gloves while doing this. Change them frequently. Many viruses can be contracted by humans when in contact with waste left by vermin. Once your house is clean, and you are confident you no longer have an infestation, you may need to routinely check for re-infestation. Make sure you can call the exterminator back after a certain period of time if they fail to rid you of these Pests. Don't get hooked into a contract with an exterminator unless you read it thoroughly and seek other estimates. Good luck.

Well as rats and mice rarely co-exist you could be grateful you don't have mice!
Call the exterminator? Or if the rat is doing the cooking-eat out!
