well, satriani rocks but he's just a speed-guy. he likes speed solos, but he's good. sometimes the hardest ones are not the best ones.

When Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac plays anything live, it's incredible. He's wasted in studio, but live, one of the greatest rock guitarists I've ever heard. May not count as a 'solo', but the best 'guitar' song I've ever heard is the live version of "Big Love" by Fleetwood Mac, on The Dance. Any fan of guitar should check this out. My favourite solo, though surely not the most difficult, is George's solo in the Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)".

Probably anything written for guitar by Italian violinist Nicolo Paganini (1742-1840). He was also a skilled guitarist and wrote over 200 works for the guitar. From what I've seen of his violin works, they're tough to play--sort of on the scale of Chopin's piano etudes--but they're incredibly effective. If Paganini's guitar works are like that, then you're in for a treat.

At the very end of Steely Dan's "My Old School", if you turn it up real loud as it cuts out, you can hear the hardest riff I have ever tried to play. Good luck if you try to figure it out.
