The meaning of love probably is different to every individual and regarding every individual. There is the love for a mate, that has sexual/lustful components. There is the love for status and resources that flows over into the "mate" type love, particularly for women (otherwise we would have no fan clubs for celebrities). There is the love of a mother for a child. (absolutely necessary for the survival of this species which require so much parental care and nurturing for the longest of any other species) There is the love of a child for a parent. There is the love of a pet animal. There is friendship type love, sometimes with a competitive edge to it. There is a mature and enduring love of another person, where sex has little to do with it, but may have brought them together initially. In my opinion, this is the best type, as it is an accepting type of love, complete with all faults on both sides, accepted and always striving to improve. This is the type of love that allows people to grow as individuals and together as a unit. This is what I never imagined myself finding, and after some rough spots have found with my husband.
Respect is necessary for this mature type of love, as is patience, generosity of time and attention, also humor (the ability to laugh at oneself and the situation rather than *at* someone else). Self-examination, awareness and acceptance of one's own faults are a key ingredient to this recipe as well.
There are other types of love not to be ignored: Love of God, love of music, love of aspargus (or chocolate or any other food), love of a culture, love of an activity. It is whatever makes you feel the best, safest, most comfortable and most stimulated intellectually all at the same time.

When you fall in love, it is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake, and then it subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots are become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the desire to mate every second of the day. It is not lying awake at night imagining that he is kissing every part of your body. For that is just being in love; which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over, when being in love has burned away.

Caring, respecting one another. Not just a significant other,...that's one type of love. Another is loving your brothers and sisters of the world. Another is loving the plants & animals around you. Another is the way you love stuff.... like I love strawberry cheescake ice-cream!

Love is this magical sensation, when you feel like you are flying farther and farther in to the clouds. And then when you finally get there you realize that you forgot your parachute on the ground.

It is knowing the person you are with will accept you for who you are and you accept them the same way, will bring out the best in you as you do in them and will
be seen with you when you look like you fell through a combiner and who's toothbrush you would use if you left your own behind!
