DVD Shrink! The name says it all, and it is free. I use it myself, so it is very simple to use.

Yes, DVD Shrink and Nero. DVD Shrink will rip the DVD to your hard drive but it does not burn. You could try manual burning utilities but I haven't had any luck with them, nor the patience to separate out the files. But, DVD Shrink will work with Nero, after it is done ripping the DVD, it will automatically start Nero and begin burning the disc. The trial version of Nero will work fine if you only want to do a few DVDs, if you want to do more then you will have to buy Nero ($99). That being said, Nero was recently on sale at Best Buy for $49 and after we entered our Reward Zone discounts we ended up getting Nero for $35, so watch for sales on Nero if it isn't an emergency. But by far the best combo is DVD Shrink and Nero.

I use DVD Decrypter to burn the movies and DVD Shrink to shrink them if needed. First you have to use the decrypter to read the DVD to your hard drive then the shrink the movies when they are too big to fit on the disc. After you read the movie and shrink it if needed, you tell the decrypter to write it and insert a blank disc into the drive. Depending on the speed of your hard drive, it could take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on whether or not you have to shrink it. Sonic is also good for doing movies too as long as they are not copyright-protected. I use the Sonic to burn movies that I get off of Kazaa. The decrypter and the shrink are both free. You just need to type in "free download for dvd decrypter" or "free download for dvd shrink" in your search bar and go from there. Good luck! : )

hello
DVD Shrink. The output from DVD Shrink can be saved as files on your hard drive, or as an ISO disc image on your hard drive, which you can then burn with software of your choice.DVD Shrink also allows you to re-author your DVD. You can make your own compilation from one or more source DVDs, or select only the parts of a DVD which you intend to view, thus preserving more space on your backup for the highest quality viewing.
Last but not least, why use DVD ShrinkBecause DVD Shrink is free!

If you want to burn DVDs no Doubt Latest version of Nero Ahead has no competition yet. To manage the size either use Windows XP Compressor or There are some Specific Tools in 'Advanced' module of Nero.

Everyone here is assuming you are burning movies (and maybe you are). On the off chance you are just trying to fit huge backups of your data to a DVD...
There is a FREE program called "7-zip". The Windows command-line/GUI version can be found at http://www.7-zip.org and the Linux/Unix command-line-only version at http://p7zip.sourceforge.net (actually it's a "port", done by a different person). Works with windows formats, such as ".zip", and Linux formats, such as ".tar" and ".bzip", but also has it's own, which offers the best compression -- ".7zip".
Another great feature of 7-zip over other programs (like WinZip) is a lot more control over where to unzip stuff, you can just extract a single file instead of all files (make sure you select all files with your keyboard if you're extracting all), and you can read a file without permanently extracting it (like if you want to read a software package's "README.TXT" file of instructions before you unpack and install).
A good program to burn with is "CDBurnerXP Pro" (only on Windows). You can get it at http://cdburnerxp.se/index.php for FREE. It burns DVD +/- R/RW, but not DVD-ROM (which probably only matters if your DVD player is really old, and doesn't matter at all if you're backing up data).

Sounds really confusing. I don't really understand all the techie error reports, but I had the same thing happen to me with Nero... I reduced the amount of data I was trying to write to the DVD and didn't get anymore errors. How much data are you trying to put on the disc?
