The lack of manufactoring would have certainly hurt them. Also, as long as slavery existed there would have been a shortage of alliances (commercial and military) from established nations. Cotton was still the major crop in the south. Glut years would have been disastrous as exports would decline the following year causing economic shortfalls. This actually happened in 1861 and 62.

Yes lack of innovation, the economy was based on an old model so without change it would have died. The slave would have eventually out numbered the masters and revolution would have ensued ie South Africa.

Some theorize that Lincoln could have brought the confederate states back into the union and eliminated slavery through some diplomacy and economic changes. We will never know.

They would have had to start their own goernment which would have failed. The north would have banned any imports or exports to them. Eventually, I would hope, the slaves would have rebelled. When you split from a working nation just to keep slaves which is greed, your confederacy will eventually fail.

The planatation owners would become dependent, arrogant, lazy, stupid (how much intelligence is required to beat people to work harder or faster), and still it would dig in its heels as an agrarian, backwards society. They would have created their own downfall.
