I have seen & been shown many tatoos on Westerners of Chinese writing. These people seem to think they have something meaningful tatooed on them , but none of the tatoos make any sense. They are all gibberish ! I am too polite to tell them though .So 3 questions :
1 Why do people do this absurd thing !
2 Does anyone have a correct Chinese tatoo ie one that would make sense to me ?
3 In China our attempts at signs in English are hilariously bad. It is my boyfriend's favourite habit to search them out & mock me. I would be grateful if anyone could send me any websites showing these meaningless tatoos so I can get revenge on him.

There is no Chinese character for "Yes".

Gothick Chick :
Sorry - I missed the joke. I like it.

Ronnie Brown :
The first character (wen) is wrong. It is missing strokes. Interestingly , it is similar in sound to the right character. The second character (Shen or body) is correct.
It looks very ugly. Chinese writing is an art form.

Love Shepherd :
Thank you so much for the link.
Chinese writing is an art form , the essence of which is the brush stroke (on paper !). A tattooed character is an abomination !

I can believe this. The Japanese are very precise. Thank you.

MamaMug ;
Thank you . I am not against Tattoos .But all art has to be done on the appropriate medium. The body is not the place for Chinese characters , you cannot get the strokes flowing.

Ronnie Brown :
I have been arguing with my boyfriend all night over your friend's tattoo. We both agree it is very ugly & badly written , but my boyfriend says it is correct. I say the first character is wrong. Oh well ...

Heath :
Actually most tattoos I see are not offensive - just meaningless. This is mainly because the character has been incorrectly written.

1. The Chinese characters look cool.
2. Many times it is the person's name made into the characters. Or it may be Japanese.
3. This site doesn't just have tattos, so it may give you even more things to tease your boyfriend about:

Tattoos are not a new "in" gig/fashion to/for me. I had my first one done at 12!!! Yes, 12!!!

Answers ???
#1: Personally I luv' having art, I know the meaning of displayed, via my bod'!!!
#2: I now, ONLY get art I know, I will want forever!!! After having 8 removed...Prior to laser!!! Lesson learned!!!
#3: Ya' can check out my 360 page for a "Westerner's" idea of "real" art.

Being 1/2 Mexican...Hispanic to be politically correct...I also have seen people flashing tattoos in "Mexican Slang", not Spanish. There is a dif'!!!...NOT having a clue as to what their tattoo means, least of all what it says!!! Unlike ya', I'm not as polite...I tell 'em what their tattoo says, or means...All the while, I'm LMFAOOL!!!

Hi, This is really all very interesting. I too think it's hilarious to see these characters around.... At least ever since I learned that they translate as the English equivalent of "All your base are belong to us". I have a friend who has started to tell me some of the ridiculous things that get inked, like one that the person thought was for "Tiger", and put it next to an actual picture of a tiger, only the character was actually "Cave". One actually made him bust out laughing like I'm sure you'd love to do with your boyfriend. It was three or so symbols on a girls lower back. I'm sure she thought they were sexy, but what was there was apparently "Table Dinner Plate"!

I have often wondered why somebody would tattoo a language they cannot understand on themselves. what if the tattooist wrote something like labotomy required but told you it meant peace and harmony. Westerners as you call us or many of them are hungry for exotic symbols they dont understand, I think they wish to be different even a little exotic themselves. what I have noticed is a large increase in interest in tribal symbols and I think this comes under this umbrella. I met a girl recently with these symbols on her feet, when asked what they were she said friendship and love
however i think it says left and right.

My firend has a Japanese character tattoo on his chest and it is his wife's name. She was there when it got done and draw the characters herself for the artist making sure that he put the strokes exactly right. Since she is Japanese she made sure that it was done correctly as she too was fed up with westerners having script put on themselves with no idea of what they say.

Well my other half had one done that I didnt think meant anything. A few years ago we were in Hong Kong and this Chinese guy game up to us and pointed to the tattoo and said what it meant, although cant remember what it was, but it was nice to know it actually meant something!

That is the reason I never got a tattoo. I wanted one but I thought what if it really doesn't mean Love or Hope like the tattoo artist said.. I would be stuck... Now I am glad I didn't get one. Thank you.

Nah, those Chinese tattoos are too trendy. It's like getting a lower-back tattoo. Too overdone.

A firend of my sister's thought she had the word 'love' on her back. But when she went on a vacation to china, people kept calling her 'kamikaze' because thats what the sign said.

Hi - check out a site called "engrish" - really funny!
In answer to your question though its the same as the chinese youths having t-shirts with completly inappropriate stuff on them. I guess that as we dont know what the symbols mean we appreciate the shape of them and like them for the way they look (never thinking in a million years that it may say "****" or "sweet & sour chicken" or something).
